How Can You Get A Groundhog Out From Under Your Shed Or Porch?

Groundhogs are animals of opportunity, as are many. However, when they take up residence under your porch or shed, you have a big problem that can be a big headache to deal with. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to know what to do.

Groundhogs love to dig. They will dig up your entire property moving dirt around and wreak havoc on your garden. In short order, they will also compromise the integrity of the buildings they burrow under. Groundhogs never stop digging.

What Not To Do

The first thing to do is avoid the temptation to seal up openings. This will just spur manic digging activity for the animal. They are protective of their burrows and do not like interference. If you attempt to seal up holes, these animals will dig even faster.

It is also vital not to dig into the burrow. Groundhogs have long, sharp incisors and heavy-duty claws. If they see you digging in, they will attack especially if they have young in the burrow.

First Things First

The first thing you should do is to educate yourself on your local laws pertaining to these animals. These laws can be confusing because groundhogs are considered nuisance animals. You can’t always just relocate them as you can other animals. Furthermore, state and local laws may differ or overlap. Contact your local wildlife management team for information regarding these animals.

The next thing you should do is consider getting professional help. There are some instances where it is well worth the money to have the job done right. Dealing with groundhogs is one of those instances.

Trapping and Exclusion

If paying a professional is not an option, then you will need to trap the animal(s). Remember, you may be dealing with a family of groundhogs. You’ll need to decide on a lethal or a live trap. Some lethal traps are inhumane so choose carefully.

You’ll also need to bait the trap with something irresistible to groundhogs. Cut cantaloupe fruit typically works very well. The sweet aroma just calls to them and will usually get them into the trap.

After the Trap

Once the animal(s) has been trapped, you will need to relocate it, shoot it or have a licensed professional pick it up. This will be determined by your comfort level and your local laws.

After the animal has been removed and it has been deemed safe, you will need to install some exclusion fencing to prevent future groundhogs. It should go all the way around your porch or shed and be buried eighteen inches under the ground. Be sure the bottom curves out to prevent animals from burrowing under it.
