Keeping Opossums Off the Property
Opossums are a health and property hazard. You do not want them anywhere near your property, nor do you want to deal with the stress that comes from removing them.
The easiest way to deal with opossums is to keep them off in the first place. It might sound difficult, as they will wander your property no matter what, but there are ways to reduce their presence and their likelihood of sticking around.
Keeping opossums away is manageable for all individuals and properties. So long as you are safe and smart about what you do, you should see an immediate decrease in the opossum population around your property and you should see them stop coming entirely.
An Undesirable Home
Opossums go to your property because they see something they want. Whether it is food or an open shelter, they see it and they like it.
So long as that something remains, they are going to continue going into your property. You want to figure out what is attracting them and remove it.
For food, keep anything edible hidden away. Pick up pet food, do not leave out any type of food, and secure trash. If there is no food attracting them, or if they cannot find the food, they are going to move on to somewhere they can.
For shelter, keep access minimal. If there are holes or easy access points around your property, seal them. Do not give the opossums a way into your property, where they can then begin to nest.
Anything the opossums like, take it away. Make your property undesirable to them.
A Secure Home
Look around your property for any access points, either to the yard or to the inside of your property. This is an extension of making your home undesirable, but an important thing to keep in mind.
Have a secure fence around the perimeter of your property. Opossums can climb, but you want to add extra effort to getting into your property. You want to make them choose the easiest route, which means less climbing and less searching.
Secure any holes in your fence, attic, roof, porch, shed, or other areas around the home. If there is a way to get in, they will.
To keep the opossums away, keep your home free of what they want. Without food or shelter, they are going to have no choice but to go elsewhere.
